Founded in 1983, SAWS is celebrating its 31st year of existence. SAWS is a non-profit Society located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Its mandate is to promote fine woodworking to the public and to raise interest in SAWS by encouraging membership.

SAWS January 20, 2016 Meeting

SAWS will hold the first meeting of 2016 on Wednesday January 20 commencing at 7:00 pm at Scarboro Community Centre.

As has been the case in past years January will be a show and tell session.  This is an opportunity to showcase your new tools from Christmas and the projects that you wish to brag about or the failures (if you don't have failures you are trying hard enough) you want some input on.

This will be a social evening (your spouse/significant other is invited) with food & drink as well as a presentation by Dale Lowe.

SAWS November 18, 2015 Meeting

The November meeting will be held at the Manchester DI Workshop  5513 -3 St SE commencing at 7:00 pm.



Don James will be making some shavings demonstrating his expertise and sharing some tricks on the lathe.  I for one want to know how he made those wafer thin disks on his candle sticks.



Brian Graham will show off a new Martin panel saw, Biesse 3-axis CNC machine, spiral head thickness planer and a Sawstop table saw.

Mick McGowan a cabinet making instructor from SAIT will tell us about a woodworking exhibition scheduled for November 2016.


SAWS 2015 Exhibition Peoples Choice prize winner

People viewing the SAWS 2015 Exhibition and Sale at Southcentre Mall were able to cast a ballot for their favourite piece. By way of a random draw from the ballots, one lucky winner would receive a custom turning crafted by Don James expressly for the People Choice draw.  The 2015 recipient is Ermine Joseph shown here accepting her prize.






Tallying all the ballots, the piece receiving the most votes for Peoples Choice award in 2015 was the Walnut Writing Desk designed and built by Mike Mulvey.  Congrats to Mike!  A photo of Mike's desk is shown below.



SAWS October 2015 Meeting

SAWS regular monthly meeting will be held on Wednesday October 21 commencing at 7:00 pm.  We will return to Scarboro Community Hall 1727 - 14 Avenue SW for this meeting.  Our guest presenter is no stranger to SAWS, Roman Hrytsak will present his techniques and design considerations in carving wooden shoes and boots.  Charlies's Shuffle shown below was featured in our 2013 Exhibition.

SAWS 2015 Exhibition and Sale September 11-20

SAWS 2015 Exhibition and Sale is taking place at Southcentre Mall in Centre Court from September 11 to 20.  On display are 31 pieces ranging from delicate turnings to a massive live edge table (named Magnum appropriately).  Choose your favourite and enter your selection in a free draw and you could win a turned bowl custom made by Don James

SAWS September 2015 Meeting

The SAWS September meeting will be held on Wednesday September 16 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at SOUTHCENTRE MALL in Centre Court in conjunction with our 2015 Exhibition and Sale.  This will be an opportunity for members to quiz makers on "how did you do that?"   Also jury members Donna White, Doug Haslam (and maybe Bryce Ohneck) will be present to provide commentary on design considerations.  Photographs are nice but having the pieces to view with your own eyes is best.

SAWS at Calgary Stampede

SAWS was present at the Western Showcase Creative Arts & Crafts exhibit on July 10 at the Calgary Stampede.

SAWS AGM June 20, 2015

SAWS Annual General Meeting  Saturday June 20, 2015



Our AGM  will commence at 9:00 am on Saturday June 20 at John Morel's shop in Dewinton.  Talar and Jean-Claude Prefontaine (first prize winners in 2013 exhibition) will present on design and execution of modern marquetry and parquetry.  Bring along a cutting mat (e.g. MDF) and and an X-ACTO or Olfa knife for some hands on.

Following a business session, pot luck lunch will be provided by SAWS members.

May Shop Tours 2015

Our May meeting will be the annual shop tour day on Saturday May 9.  The first stop is at Refined Rustic Furniture 120 Forge Road SE commencing at 9:00 am.  Information on the other three shops will be in the May newsletter.

Southern Alberta Woodworker's Society: January 21, 2015 Meeting Update

An addendum to the note about the regular monthly meeting January 21 at 7:00 pm.  The new name for Calmet is Performax.  Same address Performax Tooling Ltd, #40 3270 46 Avenue SE .



Owners, Kurt Collins and Guy Godbout, will explain the selection and
applications of wood cutting tools, including tablesaw blades, jointer knives
and router bits. Ceramic tipped tablesaw blades will be included. A
demonstration of sharpening tablesaw blades will follow.

Suggested access is Peigan Trail, south onto 36th St., then west onto 46th Ave.
Look for the brown brick building at 32nd Street.
