December 2013 - Adventure Travels with IWCS

This is the annual Christmas social event.The meeting will include the Calgary Wood Turners. Members are invited to bring along friends and spouses.

Members of the International Wood Collectors Society recently returned from South Africa where they attended one of the IWCS International meetings. The presentation will be about their travels and wood-collecting experiences there and in other sites around the world.

After the presentation there will be refreshments and snacks served.

November 2013 - Marquetry, Sand Shading and Inlay

Wednesday November 20, 2013 -- 7:00 pm
Location: Scarboro Community Center 

Gary Gunthorpe will discuss the basics of designing and implementing a simple Marquetry project using a modified 'window' method.  

Matt Smith will then conduct a demonstration on sand shading. This technique is often used to create fans, but can be used any time you want to create a sense of depth by creating the illusion of a shadow. He will show both how to create the shading and to insert the inlay 

October 2013 - Preparation and Execution of a Through Dovetail Joint

Wednesday, October 16, 2013 - 7:00 p.m.

William Aberhart High School Wood Shop
3009 Morley Trail NW, Calgary, AB

Duncan Robertson will provide a demonstration using hand tools in the preparation and execution of a through dovetail joint.

Bring your own dovetail saw and have a go at some sawing exercises. This should be a very fun night.

September 2013 - Exhibition Review

Wednesday September 18, 7:00 pm

The September SAWS meeting will be held at the DaDe Art & Design Lab, 1327 9th Avenue SE, Inglewood, starting at 7:00 pm. The topic for this meeting will be a review of the 2013 Fine Works in Wood Exhibition.

The judges will be in attendance, and will be sharing their evaluation of the pieces.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn how to create a successful Exhibition entry for the 2015 Exhibition.

Wine and Cheese Opening at Dade

There will be Wine and Cheese September 13 at 7:00 pm to celebrate the opening of the Exhibition at the DaDe Art & Design Lab. Everyone is invited.

2013 Exhibition - Fine Works in Wood

The Southern Alberta Woodworkers Society is proud to announce that the 2013 Exhibition has begun. The Exhibition has closed at Southcentre Mall, but will continue September 13 through October 27 at the DaDe Art and Design Lab, 1327 9th Avenue SE, Calgary
Gallery hours are:
TUESDAY - SUNDAY
11:00 AM - 6:00 PM

There will be Wine and Cheese to celebrate the opening September 13 at 7:00 pm. Everyone is invited.

June 2013 - AGM

Saturday June 22, 2013 - Annual General Meeting
9:00 am at The Furniture Makers Shop

The final meeting of the 2012/2013 season is scheduled for June 22.
It will be an full day with Gernot Keifer instructing on woodcarving in the morning followed by an annual general meeting of the society.
Lunch will be provided. Instructions for finding the location are in the June Newsletter. We hope to see you all there.
